Resumo

PRESENTATION: the frequency which health workers suffer workplace violence is revealed in the scientific literature, as well as health institutions requirements to adopt interventions seeking violent incidents prevention and supporting workers who were victims. There are Brazilian initiatives focused on improving aspects of work in the health area and some are specific for workplace violence. However, it is necessary to advance in the discussions and implementation of interventions related to prevention of violence and taking decisions when its occur, due to negative effects it can result for the person. The aim of this study was to discuss the importance of establishing formal plans to guide the administrative flow and the victim healthcare after the occurrence of workplace violence and to elaborate intervention proposal or recommendations in this context. WORK DEVELOPMENT: this work was a collective building from authors’ opinion and their health work environment experience, such as teaching, community service extension, research and/or direct healthcare provision. The scientific literature on workplace violence was researched to support the intervention proposal by the authors. RESULTS: considering the workplace violence occurrence and the negative impact generated by them, it is important to utilize prevention strategies and be prepared to act appropriately when this violence occurs, even with the measures adopted to avoid it. In situations of occupational exposure to biological material, for example, guidelines on the procedures and/or sectors that should be sought are generally described in flowchart or protocols and are known by workers, and easily accessed in printed or online version. On the other hand, these elements are often not defined in the field of the workplace violence (e.g. verbal abuse and threat), which weakens the identification of events and consequently the proper conduct of a case, with the support and follow-up for the victims who need. For this reason, formal guidelines are important on the conduct that should be adopted after health workers suffered workplace violence, as well as structured flows and services and a staff team ethically responsible and trained. Otherwise, the professional will not report the problem, and when the problem is reported the professional may not receive help or the violence occurrence will be conducted without following a standardized flow of notification and assistance. In this way, recommendations were designed to encourage the development of standardized strategies to receive and provide the care which the victims of workplace violence or under threat need, as well as to investigate and to conduct the case adequately. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: physical and mental health care for workers who have suffered workplace violence needs to be improved and begins with the incentive to report the violence suffered. The care of the worker should be a priority, immediately after the occurrence of violence and for as long as necessary. The institutions should promote safety in a co-responsibility relation for health and life of their workers.
